When confronted by Pharaoh, they lied and claimed that they simply couldn’t get there before the babies were born. These midwives risked their own lives to help save the Israelites from destruction and genocide. They practiced civil disobedience from their unique position of influence and refused to “just follow orders” when those orders were unjust. We honor their resistance. These two brave women engaged in the first recorded acts of civil disobedience.
",

We will wash our hands twice during our seder: now, with no blessing, to get us ready for the rituals to come; and then again later, we’ll wash again with a blessing, preparing us for the meal, which Judaism thinks of as a ritual in itself (The Jewish obsession with food is older than you thought!).
\n\n
Pour water from the pitcher on each of your hands three times, alternating between your hands.
",

We don’t hear of Moses being found by the daughter of Pharaoh – actually, we don’t hear much of Moses at all. Instead, we get an impressionistic collection of songs, images, and stories of both the Exodus from Egypt and from Passover celebrations through the centuries. Some say that minimizing the role of Moses keeps us focused on the miracles God performed for us. Others insist that we keep the focus on the role that every member of the community has in bringing about positive change.
",

In Judaism, a good meal together with friends and family is itself a sacred act, so we prepare for it just as we prepared for our holiday ritual, recalling the way ancient priests once prepared for service in the Temple.
\n\n
Some people distinguish between washing to prepare for prayer and washing to prepare for food by changing the way they pour water on their hands. For washing before food, pour water three times on your right hand and then three times on your left hand.
\n\n
Wash hands while reciting the traditional blessing for washing the hands:
\n\n
\n\n
Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu al n'tilat yadayim.
\n\n
Praised are you, Adonai, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has taught us the way of holiness through commandments, commanding us to wash our hands.
\n\n\n\n
\n\n
Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al n’tilat yadayim.
\n\n
We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who made us holy through obligations, commanding us to wash our hands.
",

Said the father to his children
\nAt the seder you will dine
\nYou will eat your fill of matzah
\nYou will drink four cups of wine.
\n\n
2. Now this father had no daughters
\nBut his sons, they numbered four
\nOne was wise and one was wicked
\nOne was simple and a bore.
\n\n
3. And the fourth was sweet and winsome
\nHe was young and he was small
\nWhile his brothers asked the questions
\nHe could scarcely speak at all.
\n\n
4. Said the wise son to his father
\n\"Would you please explain the laws
\nOr the customs of the Seder
\nWill you please explain the cause?\"
\n\n
5. And the father proudly answered,
\n\"As our fathers ate in speed,
\nAte the Paschal lamb 'ere midnight
\nAnd from slavery were freed.\"
\n\n
6. \"So we follow their example
\nAnd 'ere midnight must complete
\nAll the Seder; and we should not
\nAfter twelve remain to eat.\"
\n\n

\n7. Then did sneer the son so wicked
\n\"What does all this mean to you?\"
\nAnd the father's voice was bitter
\nAs his grief and anger grew.
\n\n
8. If yourself you don't consider
\nAs a son of Israel
\nThen for you this has no meaning
\nYou could be a slave as well.\"
\n\n
9. Then the simple son said softly,
\n\"What is this?\" and quietly
\nThe good father told his offspring
\n\"We were freed from slavery.\"
\n\n
10. But the youngest son was silent
\nFor he could not ask at all.
\nAnd his eyes were bright with wonder
\nAs his father told him all.
\n\n
11. Now dear children, heed the lesson
\nAnd remember ever more
\nWhat the father told his children
\nTold his sons who numbered four.
",
