Jacob’s son Joseph had risen to high position in Pharaoh’s court, and our people were well-respected and well-regarded.\n\nIn time, a new Pharaoh who knew nothing of Joseph, ascended to the throne. He found the Israelites differences threatening and feared their growing numbers and forced them into slavery. \n\nThe Egyptians set harsh taskmasters over the Israelites.\n\nThe Israelites were forced into hard labor, they knew no peace nor rest, only misery and pain but kept their faith and grew in number. In fear of rebellion, Pharaoh decreed that the midwives kill all Israelite boys upon birth. Haggadah Section: Bareich

We now drink our fourth cup of wine. The fourth cup corresponds to God’s fourth promise to free the Israelites from their slavery.

The fourth cup wine is also for Miriam, a prophet and Moses’ sister who arranged for Yocheved to be Moses’ wet nurse, as well as being credited with providing the well of living water that accompanied and sustained the freed people on their journey.

With this fourth cup, take a moment to recall Seders from your past, and remember a matriarch from your family that played a role in shaping your Jewish identity. Honor the memory of a strong woman who sat at your family’s Passover table.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן
